Christa Blackwood is a Brooklyn-based photo, text, and installation artist whose work explores identity, history, and popular culture. Raised in Oklahoma City and New Orleans, she holds a degree in Classics and Filmmaking from the University of Oklahoma and an MA from New York University. Her 1991 street poster Butcherknives, addressing sexual violence, led to an invitation to join the Woman's Action Coalition. Her work has been shown at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Ogden Museum, the Houston Center for Photography, San Francisco City Hall, and Contemporary Austin, and covered by the New York Times and Village Voice. She founded the Children's Photographic Collective, running free photography and literacy workshops for students in New York City and Austin from 1995 to 2007.
