Ella Yang

A self-taught artist, I paint "en plein air" when the weather permits, and often from photos of familiar locales. Based in Brooklyn, I look for subjects in my backyard, often views where the commonplace seems to have a special patina at a particular moment, whether in the gritty, industrial zone by the Gowanus Canal or in a historic brownstone residential neighborhood. When I was a child, my mother routinely pointed out small details and taught me to be attentive to the colors, shapes, and textures nearby. This practice of being attuned to my surroundings is a critical part of my art-making process.
