Jo-Ann M. Acey is a painter and printmaker with a studio at the Brooklyn Art Cluster in Gowanus. She holds a BFA from Daemen College and an MFA in painting and drawing from Texas Tech University, and has studied printmaking with master printer Kathy Caraccio since 2006. A member of 440 Gallery in Park Slope since 2016, Acey works in mixed media, Flashe, and works on paper, drawing on memory and imagination to depict landscapes, seascapes, and dwellings where color and gesture take precedence over subject matter. She has held solo shows at 440 Gallery and the Cousen Rose Gallery on Martha's Vineyard, among more than a hundred group and solo exhibitions since 1985, and her work is held in private collections in the U.S., Italy, Canada, Japan, and Mexico.

My imagery emerges from memories and imagination; it reflects flashes of land, sea, and dwelling places. The true essence lies in the symbolism of each work. Subject matter becomes secondary to an emotional reaction to the landscape, color, or movement. Gesture and emotion are critical elements in my work. My new work has direction and control, yet there remains a spontaneity and freshness of line and color.
