Kiki Smith is a German-born American artist working primarily in sculpture, printmaking, and drawing, extending at times into artist's books, tapestries, and mosaics. She moved to New York in the 1970s, joined the downtown Colab artist collective, and held her first solo show, Life Wants to Live, at The Kitchen in 1982. Her figurative work of the late 1980s and early 1990s engaged the body, AIDS, and feminism; more recent work turns to the human condition in relation to nature, through imagery of animals, plants, and the cosmos. Smith has worked in downtown Manhattan for decades, dividing her time with the Hudson Valley, and has shown repeatedly in the Whitney Biennial and Venice Biennale, with prints held in depth by MoMA and the Whitney Museum.
