LAURIE ROSENWALD
Paintingmy design work and my paintings are connected. in my view, if an artwork doesn't communicate without a written explanation, it has failed. my subjects are easy to figure out. some are nudes, some portraits, others typographic or abstract. i value clarity, humor, and a direct approach. drawing is everything. and all of my paintings are really drawings. i wanted a thick, opaque surface, so instead of oils i have been using the ancient method of encaustic - melted beeswax blended with dry pigment and damar resin, applied hot to wood panels, grounded with milk paint, which i also prepare myself from an antique recipe. whether or not you like my paintings, they will last at least 2000 years. a friend once said, "i don't know what it is, but i want to eat it." that made me happy.
