Raven Kushner
PaintingRaven Kushner is a figurative painter whose work imagines African American women within an alternative universe—one where they have never been harmed, maligned, or oppressed. Through her paintings, she explores a vision of the world shaped by spiritual oneness, dignity, and integration.
I create paintings that reimagine Black identity through the lens of beauty, power, and possibility. My work is an act of restoration—placing people of African descent within narratives of grace, presence, and self-possession. Rooted in classical training, my practice draws from chiaroscuro, compositional balance, and the slow revelation of form. These foundations are paired with an intuitive use of color, allowing atmosphere and interiority to emerge with restraint and intention. Sacred geometry, particularly the triangle, quietly structures my compositions, establishing balance and harmony beneath the surface. Much of my work centers Black women depicted in states of stillness and rest—occupying space with calm authority and inward focus. Through this synthesis of structure and intuition, I create paintings intended to endure—works that reward sustained looking and hold space for contemplation over time.
