The American Institute of Architects New York Chapter, known as AIA New York, is a professional and cultural organization founded in 1857, when thirteen architects met in Richard Upjohn's Manhattan office to form what is now the oldest and largest AIA chapter, serving licensed architects, allied professionals, and students. In 2003 the chapter opened the Center for Architecture as its public-facing cultural institution, a venue for exhibitions, tours, and discussions on architecture and the built environment. AIA New York's programming spans continuing education, licensing preparation, design competitions, grants, and committees covering topics from residential architecture to design for aging, and it publishes the quarterly Oculus magazine.
