Artists Space is a nonprofit contemporary art institution founded in 1972 by Irving Sandler and Trudie Grace with funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, created as an alternative support structure for emerging artists outside the museum and commercial gallery system. Now located at 11 Cortlandt Alley in Tribeca, Manhattan, it presents exhibitions, performances, and public programs. Its history includes landmark moments such as Douglas Crimp's 1977 "Pictures" exhibition and the 1978 festival that launched the No Wave music movement, along with early initiatives like the Emergency Materials Fund and an Artists File that grew to over 10,000 artists. It has also partnered with W.A.G.E. on artist compensation standards.
