Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum occupies the landmarked Andrew Carnegie Mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side, in the Museum Mile district. Founded in 1897 by Sarah, Eleanor, and Amy Hewitt, granddaughters of Peter Cooper, as a museum for the arts of decoration at Cooper Union, it became part of the Smithsonian Institution in 1968 and relocated to the 64-room Carnegie Mansion in 1970, making it the first Smithsonian museum outside Washington, D.C. Billed as the only U.S. museum devoted exclusively to historical and contemporary design, it holds a collection of roughly 200,000 objects spanning furniture, textiles, drawings, and ceramics, and presents exhibitions, a research library, and educational programming, including the annual National Design Awards.
