The Dahesh Museum of Art is a New York museum devoted to European academic art of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the only U.S. institution with that focus. It was established in 1987 from the collection of Lebanese writer Salim Moussa Achi, known by the pen name Dr. Dahesh, and opened to the public in 1995 with more than 2,000 academic paintings emphasizing Orientalist works and illustration. After outgrowing an initial Fifth Avenue gallery, the museum moved to a larger Madison Avenue space in 2003, left that location in 2008 to operate as a traveling museum without walls, and reopened at a smaller Manhattan location in 2012. It runs traveling exhibitions, an online collection, and an annual Graduate Student Symposium in Nineteenth-Century Art.
