Dia Chelsea is the Manhattan exhibition space of the Dia Art Foundation, established in 1974 by Heiner Friedrich, Philippa de Menil, and Helen Winkler to support large-scale artist projects beyond the capacity of standard museums and galleries. Dia opened its first Chelsea building in 1987 as the Dia Center for the Arts on West 22nd Street, the first art institution in the neighborhood, and later consolidated a group of adjacent buildings on the block into a unified complex. A 2018 renovation created roughly 32,500 square feet of space, including about 20,000 square feet for exhibitions. Dia Chelsea presents long-term, temporary exhibitions dedicated to one or two artists at a time, drawn from the foundation's collection of modern and contemporary art, with free admission.
