The Drawing Center is a nonprofit institution in SoHo, Manhattan, dedicated to drawing as a primary artistic medium. It was founded in 1977 by Martha Beck, a former assistant curator of drawings at the Museum of Modern Art, with a mandate to present the quality and diversity of works on paper as a major art form. Originally housed in a warehouse space on Greene Street, the institution moved to its current SoHo home in the late 1980s and underwent a $10 million renovation, completed in 2012, that expanded its exhibition space. Recent programming has included exhibitions of artists such as Lee Quinones, KAWS, and Stephane Mandelbaum, alongside artist talks and a bilingual drawing program for families.
