The Institute for Public Architecture (IPA) is a nonprofit that uses design to address social, physical, and environmental inequities in New York City, operating from an office in Manhattan and a programming base in the historic Block House on Governors Island. Its signature Independent Project Residency invites emerging and mid-career architects, urbanists, landscape architects, designers, and researchers to live and work together for an eleven-week residency developing independent projects focused on the public realm. The IPA also runs a Selected Topic Fellowship and public lectures, exhibitions, and publications, and has partnered with organizations including AIA Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Public Library, and the Museum of the City of New York.
