Josephine Herrick Project is a New York City nonprofit that traces its founding to 1941, when photographer Josephine Herrick organized volunteers to photograph departing servicemen for their families through the American Women's Voluntary Services. During World War II, working with rehabilitation-medicine pioneer Dr. Howard Rusk, the organization began teaching photography as therapy in veterans' hospitals, later incorporating as Volunteer Service Photographers. It was renamed Rehabilitation Through Photography in 1982 and took its current name in 2013 to honor its founder. Today the organization delivers free, instructor-led photography programs across New York City to at-risk youth, immigrants, veterans, seniors, and people with disabilities, with participants' work regularly shown in public exhibitions.
