Learning Leaders is a New York City nonprofit that began in 1956 as the School Volunteer Program, an initiative of Clara Blitzer of the Public Education Association, starting with about twenty volunteers at a single Manhattan public school. Adopted by the Board of Education in 1962, it became an independent nonprofit in 1970 and took its current name in 1999. The organization recruits, trains, and places volunteers, most of them family members, to provide one-on-one tutoring in reading, writing, and math, along with school enrichment and parent-engagement programs such as BookTalk and Book Buddies, across New York City public schools. Today it coordinates roughly 10,000 volunteers citywide each year.
