Mixteca is a community-based organization founded in 2000 in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, when Dr. Gabriel Rincón set out to address a lack of Spanish-language HIV/AIDS information affecting the neighborhood's immigrant community. Twenty-five years later the organization continues to support Mexican and Latin American immigrants in Sunset Park, coordinating health and mental-health services, legal and paralegal support, and education and community-organizing programs through a staff of coordinators and community advocates. It is led by executive director Lorena Kourousias and overseen by a volunteer board, and is registered as a nonprofit.
