The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is an art museum in Midtown Manhattan on West 53rd Street, housing more than 200,000 works from the late nineteenth century to the present across curatorial departments including painting, sculpture, photography, film, architecture, and design. Conceived in 1929 by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, Lillie P. Bliss, and Mary Quinn Sullivan, it opened that November and moved to its current site in 1939, in a building designed by Philip L. Goodwin and Edward Durell Stone. Under founding director Alfred H. Barr Jr. it became one of the country's leading institutions devoted to modern art, with holdings including work by van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, and Warhol; it merged with P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in 2010.
