Onishi Gallery is a Manhattan gallery, on the Upper East Side, specializing in contemporary Japanese craft, or kogei, including ceramics, metalwork, lacquer maki-e, sculpture, and calligraphy. Since 2005 it has worked as a liaison between the Japanese government, US museums, and cultural institutions, introducing both younger Japanese artists and government-designated "Living National Treasures" to American audiences. Several artists in its program hold that Living National Treasure designation, and works by gallery artists are held in the permanent collections of institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, and the Smithsonian. The gallery also maintains an office in Tokyo and participates in Asia Week New York.
