Pen + Brush is a nonprofit founded in 1893 in New York, when painter Janet C. Lewis proposed a group for women pursuing art and literature, holding its first official meeting in 1894; it became a legal corporation in 1912 under the presidency of writer and suffragist Grace Seton and grew over a thirty-year presidency held by journalist Ida Tarbell. Describing itself as an international nonprofit devoted to showcasing professional emerging and mid-career women and gender-expansive artists and writers, it runs rotating visual-art exhibitions and a literary-arts program that publishes members' writing, alongside artist residencies and participation in events such as the NYC Poetry Festival. Historic members have included Marianne Moore, Pearl S. Buck, and sculptor Malvina Hoffman. The organization is based in Manhattan.
