Street Lab
Art galleryStreet Lab is a New York City nonprofit, founded in 2006 and refocused since 2011 on transforming public streets, plazas, and parks with temporary pop-up installations built only in response to requests from local community partners. Its programming includes pop-up reading rooms, open-air drawing studios, and modular play and gathering equipment, deployed roughly 500 times a year citywide, with the large majority of that work in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods. The organization also helps communities launch Open Streets, School Streets, and Play Streets, and in recent years introduced Oasis, a portable misting and shade installation addressing heat vulnerability, deployed dozens of times across multiple neighborhoods. Street Lab has also shipped its pop-up designs to other cities.
