Tennis Elbow is the exhibition program of The Journal Gallery, based in Tribeca, Manhattan. The Journal began in 1999 as a snowboarding and skateboarding culture magazine founded by Michael Nevin and Julia Dippelhofer, developing a gallery component in the East Village around 2005 before expanding to a larger Williamsburg space in 2007. After that building was sold in 2018, Nevin and Dippelhofer reinvented the gallery's model as Tennis Elbow, dropping conventional practices like show titles, press releases, and opening receptions in favor of frequent rotating solo exhibitions. New shows are announced shortly before they open, and works are sold through a free, membership-only platform that vets collectors and restricts resale for two years. The program has featured artists including Helmut Lang and Oliver Clegg, with exhibitions viewable in the gallery and online.
