The African Center
Art galleryThe Africa Center is a nonprofit cultural institution in East Harlem, Manhattan, tracing its roots to the Center for African Art, founded in 1984 by Susan Mullin Vogel, which was later renamed the Museum for African Art and, in 2013, the Africa Center. After stints on the Upper East Side, in SoHo, and in Long Island City, the organization opened its current East Harlem building, designed by Robert A.M. Stern, in 2019. It describes its mission as transforming global understanding of Africa and its diaspora through exhibitions, public programs, partnerships such as the Global Africa Gateway, and cultural-exchange initiatives.
