The Painting Center is an artist-run nonprofit gallery founded in February 1993 by a group of New York painters, including Dana Gordon, Louisa Waber, Marilyn Giersbach, and David Fratkin, who had been meeting informally at a SoHo paint shop and decided to open a space dedicated exclusively to painting at a time when the medium had fallen out of favor with mainstream galleries. Its inaugural exhibition featured 49 artists, among them Jake Berthot, Louise Fishman, Bill Jensen, and Milton Resnick. The center relocated from SoHo to Chelsea in 2010 and continues to support painters at all career stages through juried exhibitions, a members' gallery, project-room shows, and artist critique sessions, without favoring any particular school or style.
