Claireware Pottery is the work of Claire Weissberg, a New York native who has made what she calls Urban Folk Pottery in Brooklyn's Gowanus neighborhood since 1989. She studied pottery with Clary Illian in Iowa and Chiyoichi Shimizu in Japan before earning an MFA in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design. Weissberg throws functional porcelain on the wheel, then slip-trails and carves the leather-hard pieces before finishing them with wax-resist glazing; her pottery is fired to cone 6 with lead-free glazes and made for daily use. Her work is sold through her Brooklyn studio, an online shop, and social media.
