Painting

A series of abstract paintings that explores a theme of shard-like triangular shapes which appear to float on top of a gestural field of color. However these shapes also serve as small cut-outs (or windows), through which glimpses of a square form can be seen- on another background. These two simultaneous, and seemingly contradictory, perspectives within the composition held my interest- to create further variations- in color, drawing. and geometry. I strive to convey the feeling of a choreographed movement, with shapes that hover and appear to be fragments of something that was formerly whole. At the same time I want to allow the viewer to participate in observing multiple perspectives. There are also five different yet related paintings that will be included. In these the shapes on top of the gestural ground are rectangular and can be seen as small paintings within the painting. These hark back to an earlier series I made in the 80's that were influenced by Hans Hoffman's late-period paintings. Thanks for looking.
