JMikal Davis is a Brooklyn-based artist who works under the name Hellbent, adopted after he moved to the city in 2000 following his graduation from the University of Georgia. He began making street art in the late 1990s, first known for hand-carved wooden plaques distributed around New York; since 2011 his practice has centered on abstract pattern work drawing on American quilt-making and folk-art traditions, layering patterns and textiles tied to local communities across murals and paintings. His work has been shown at the New Museum and C24 Gallery in New York, and in Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, with collaborations for Ralph Lauren and Coach. One of his murals in the Financial District was named among New York's best commercial-space artworks by Architectural Digest, and his work has appeared in The New York Times, Vogue, and Juxtapoz.
