Mary Chang is a Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary artist working in painting, drawing, and printmaking (monotype). Born in Manhattan and raised in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, where she still lives, she studied at the School of Visual Arts and Cooper Union. After a career in theater, she returned to painting in 1999. Her work has been exhibited at MoCADA, UrbanGlass, and internationally, including the Pinacoteca de São Paulo.

Painting, theater and movement are the art forms, The line of distance between my process in theater and painting are one in the same. The tools interchange creating and building the work, bringing the foundation of learned technique and spontaneity. The effects of color and energy are presented in our daily lives and conditions the spirit. The aim is to give color, texture and form, the mobility to compliment and agitate, contain and scatter into emotion and composition, producing variations of sensations, finding and meeting new possibilities, and spontaneously allowing the work to unfold. I am inspired by every aspect of life thus transforming color and movement into their own visual plays of depth.
