Painting

Sula Gordon is a multimedia artist and admissions counselor at Parsons School of Design. Her most recent artist residency is Carrizozo Air. Through her paintings and prints, Gordon creates both the world she sees and the one she longs to see. She emphasizes healing rather than pain, rejecting the fetishization of Black suffering and resisting the notion of Blackness as a monolith. Using paint, printmaking, and any medium available, Gordon crafts a love letter to herself, her family, and her community—affirming that their beauty is not unseen.

I am a multimedia artist. Through my art I create the world I see and the world I want to see. I focus on healing rather than pain since it seems like the only time black people are depicted it must be surrounding suffering. It would give the impression that being black is nothing but turmoil but I love being black. Through my paints, prints, and whatever else I can get my hands on, I write a love letter to myself, my family, and my community telling them their beauty is not unseen.
