Kai Matsumiya is a contemporary art gallery on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, founded in 2014 by its namesake dealer, who previously worked on HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns for the United Nations before opening the space. Matsumiya, who studied philosophy and art history, runs the gallery on an artist-centric model, favoring experimentation and treating each exhibition as a kind of argument rather than a straightforward sales presentation. The program focuses on emerging and mid-career artists, including Natascha Sadr Haghighian, who represented Germany at the 2019 Venice Biennale, along with Steffani Jemison, Jan Kiefer, and Pedro Wirz. Rather than scale into a larger commercial operation, Matsumiya has deliberately kept the gallery small, describing his approach as staying "lean and mean" while prioritizing artistic integrity.
