The New Museum is a Lower East Side contemporary art museum founded in 1977 by curator Marcia Tucker with a mission to introduce new art and ideas by artists who had not yet received significant exposure or recognition. It moved to its current Lower East Side building in December 2007, a seven-story, roughly 58,700-square-foot structure designed by SANAA and Gensler. The museum became non-collecting in 2021, and its staff voted to unionize in January 2019. Beyond exhibitions, it organizes the New Museum Triennial, runs the new-media platform Rhizome, and operates the arts-and-technology incubator NEW INC. An OMA-designed expansion doubling its exhibition space opened in March 2026; longtime director Lisa Phillips, who has led the museum since 1999, announced her retirement that April.
