The New Museum of Contemporary Art — commonly known as the New Museum — is a nonprofit Manhattan institution founded in 1977 by curator Marcia Tucker to spotlight art and ideas by artists who had not yet received significant exposure, with an emphasis on emerging and under-recognized practitioners. Since relocating to a SANAA- and Gensler-designed building on Manhattan's Lower East Side in December 2007, it has presented exhibitions, performances, and public programs centered on living artists. The museum runs the recurring New Museum Triennial, the online new-media platform Rhizome, and NEW INC, an incubator supporting artists working with technology. It became a non-collecting institution in 2021, and in March 2026 opened an OMA-designed expansion that doubled its exhibition space.
