NYC SALT is an artist-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides digital photography and visual-arts instruction, mentoring, and college and career guidance to underserved New York City youth. It grew out of an after-school photography class founder Alicia Hansen, a professional photographer, began teaching in Washington Heights, and was formally established as a nonprofit in 2008. The organization now serves roughly 150 young people annually through studio-based instruction as well as partnerships with schools and community centers across the city, year-round. Its stated mission is to engage, inspire, and empower youth to develop a sense of agency, belonging, and identity through photography.
