Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation is a nonprofit founded in 1995 by brothers Danny Simmons, a visual artist, Russell Simmons, and Joseph 'Rev Run' Simmons of Run-DMC, with a mission to expand arts access and exhibition opportunities for underrepresented artists and inner-city youth. The organization grew out of the Rush Arts Gallery and Resource Center, which the brothers opened in Chelsea, Manhattan, after Danny Simmons observed that public-housing residents across the street from the gallery rarely engaged with it. The foundation later hired an executive director and launched Art For Life, its signature benefit event, while shifting emphasis toward in-house arts education programming for students designed to support academic performance and offer alternatives to high-risk behavior. It is listed in the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs directory of cultural organizations.
