Salmagundi Club is a nonprofit fine arts organization founded in 1871 as the New York Sketch Class, making it one of the oldest art clubs in the United States. Since 1917 it has occupied an Italianate brownstone townhouse in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, a designated New York City landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The club hosts exhibitions, painting demonstrations, lectures, and auctions, and maintains a permanent collection of roughly 1,800 representational artworks. It sponsors the U.S. Coast Guard Art Program and has counted painters William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, N.C. Wyeth, and sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens among its past members. Membership, once limited to men, opened to women in 1973 and today totals roughly 1,250.
