The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian maintains a branch, the George Gustav Heye Center, in the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House in Lower Manhattan, a Beaux-Arts landmark designed by Cass Gilbert. The center displays Native American art and cultural objects and hosts exhibitions, film and video screenings, school programs, and living-culture presentations. Its holdings descend from the collection assembled over 54 years by George Gustav Heye, who founded the Museum of the American Indian in 1916; that collection, representing the bulk of the Smithsonian museum's total holdings, moved to the Custom House after the original Audubon Terrace location closed in 1994.
