Art galleryUlterior Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in Manhattan founded in 2016 by gallerist Takako Tanabe, who trained at the University of Dallas and previously worked at the Amon Carter Museum and as an education and collections associate at Chinati in Marfa before moving to New York. The gallery opened on the Lower East Side in June 2016 with the group show 'May We Meet Again' and relocated to a SoHo space in spring 2022. Ulterior's program centers on emerging and mid-career, intergenerational artists from diverse cultural backgrounds, presenting exhibitions such as 'On the Air,' an interdisciplinary group show organized with curator Darling Green featuring JJJJJerome Ellis and Lily Greenham & Andrew Walsh-Lister, among others. The gallery also participates in art fairs including the Dallas Art Fair.
