UrbanGlass is a nonprofit glassmaking center in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, founded in 1977 as the New York Experimental Glass Workshop by recent art-school graduates Erik Erikson, Richard Yelle, and Joe Upham. It was the first artist-access glass studio in the United States and remains the largest, having hosted early members of the studio glass movement including Dale Chihuly and Toots Zynsky. The organization relocated to Brooklyn in 1991, taking over the former Strand Theatre and adopting the UrbanGlass name, and underwent a $62 million renovation and expansion between 2011 and 2013 that brought its studio to roughly 17,000 square feet. UrbanGlass provides artist studio access, education programs, and exhibition space dedicated to advancing the use of glass as a creative medium.
