My Morning Gluyasses/Nadia Berenstein
Mixed mediaAbout a year ago, a few months after the death of my mother, I found myself spellbound by an illustration of a man looking at his own butt in the mirror. The drawing, by legendary New Yorker cartoonist Gluyas Williams, first appeared in 1930. It depicted something I had never seen represented, but had often experienced: the moment when you realize, with great effort, something about yourself that is plainly obvious to everyone else. I began compulsively drawing and otherwise recreating this image in my sketchbook. I will be showing a selection of Morning Gluyasses, in addition to several multimedia works-in-progress that have emerged from them
