The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is a modern and contemporary art museum on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, established through the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation that mining heir Solomon Guggenheim set up in 1937. It opened in 1939 as the Museum of Non-Objective Painting under curator Hilla von Rebay and took its current name in 1952. Its landmark spiral building, the only museum designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, took 15 years to plan and was completed in 1959; it was named a National Historic Landmark in 2008 and, in 2019, was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List. The museum's collection of roughly 8,000 works spans Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and modern and contemporary art, including the Thannhauser Collection.
